A new weapon in the fight against asbestos mesothelioma may be on the horizon. Even though gene therapy is not approved for use in the U.S. or Europe, China became the first and only country to approve it for use in 2003. Many scientists believe that gene therapy could be the next great cure for cancer and there is much research around the world being done in this field.
Gendicine works by reactivating the p53 gene in cancer cells. The p53 gene is considered the "guardian" gene in our DNA because it acts to repair damaged DNA and in extreme cases of damage such as mesothelioma cancer, it will cause the cell to self destruct. Unfortunately, many of the toxins that cause cancer in the first place, shut off the p53 gene. Gendicine is injected into the cancer cells through a virus and reactivates the p53 gene in the cancer cell to cause it to essentially commit suicide, thereby reducing the tumour.
